    Hi Gargi shetty,

I think the dal u are mentioning is palak made with moong dal(pesarapappu)the same one I tasted in Bhimas(blore)u can check out for the recipe in dals in my website but u can use moong dal instead of toor dal if u want the same taste as the restaurant one.
Hope that helps u and the chutney I am unable to guess with the color u mentioned.

    • Hi,
Recently i have attended one social function of our comunity. They served Parvalas a vegetable.I inquired from where they purchased because i have not seen parval in manny stores of LA.
There is one store name “Patel brothers” from there they purchase Parvar.May be from Santa Clara. In Florida there are growers, somebody told me during disscusion. In NJ you get this easily.
In short search in “patel brothers”you will get it. I think very long reply……

        Prabha gaaru,

        I call Tomato(టొమాటో) in Telugu as రామ ములక్కాయ
Coming to history of టొమాటో, this fruit/vegetable is not native to India. It came from South American region and was introduced by Europeans to India as టొమాటో. Prior to that Indian’s don’t know what the fruit is and in Telugu somebody might have given the name రామ ములక్కాయ. Right now, I can not answer on this, but definitely I shall post here the history of Tomato in Andhra.

        Best Regards
        Sudhakar Chavali

      • రామ ములక్కాయ is correct!

We telugus make vaakaya pappu, Vakaya coconut (chutney) pachadi. I think this berry is only available in August thru November. I have seen this berry even in Bombay vegitable markets.

Great job! Can’t stop appreciating / thanking you for doing something different.

Is there any means by which you can add pictures / photos to your vegetables’ / spices’ list? to avoid regional or lingual terminology and confusions. This should be of great help to visitors like us. Just a thought!

‘m from Chittoor district, wherein ANAPAKAYA is a beans kind of vegetable available during Sankranthi. With this we cook a dish called ‘PITIKA PAPPU”. These are available only in southern parts of karnataka / Andhra Pradesh. I wonder, what do you call this in english?

i would like to know what is the correct name of a vegetable that grows on a vine here in South Africa. It is green and bell shaped with ridges and also has spines on it. When peeled it is green to white in color. It is commonly called Susu or Soosoo. I have tried to find this vegetable on the net but no such luck. When cleaning it makes the hands sticky which forms a skin if left to dry. It can be cooked like a potato as well as fried. Draws a lot of water if kooked though.

Hi Madhoori, First I would like to appreciate you for your work and the amount of effort you have put into this to give good information. But in one of your answers/reply you told that “In Telugu Tomato is called “Tamota” just difference in calling it” when you were asked about the name for tomato in Telugu to someone down the line that. But I would like to share some of my knowledge with you that tomato is called as “ramamkaya” in some of the villages/towns in Our State. So if you could add this information too, might be helpful for most of them. Hope this has helped you in some or the other way. I apologize if I have taken too much lenience here.

Lettuce is not kothimeera.. Lettuce is leafy vegetable which tastes similar to cabbage. In India it was never cultivated. Recently farmers in some areas started cultivation of this. So no Indian language didn’t put some name to this beautiful vegetable.

Dondakaya- Ivy gourd. Or Gentlemen’s toes.

Gherkins are a cultivar of cucumbers, they are not dondakaya.

also, Dosakaya is a variety of Cucumber indigenous to south India, it is best described as a ’round yellow cucumber’, or as ‘Indian Apple Cucumber” since there is a western “Apple cucumber” originating from China which is a bit like dosakaya.

Regarding readers posts what I opine is kindly separate them and transfer them to a blog may call it posts .
    Here it is very lengthy.
One more thing is whenever a new name asked and translated , it should automatically go under the list of main page. So that readers need not search for it again or ask again. Some readers may not be able to
    read all posts patiently .
Hope this is useful for all of us.

      • Posted by Sudhakar Chavali on September 14, 2010 at 6:00 am

        Hello Rama,

It is difficult to figure-out name for cranberry in Indian language, reason being is we never see this fruit in Indian geographical region. We are seeing these fruits just now in India. So somebody need to give a name to it. 🙂

        Thanks & Best Regards

Mayonnaise is not a vegetable but a kind of sauce prepared using eggs, oil and vinegar. This is a western import into India mostly in recent times (last 2 decades). SO no telugu/tamil/malayalam/hindi names for this stuff.

Your website is very helpful about our vegetables and its names in Telugu. Here in Detroit we are going to grow Diversity Garden that includes many of our vegetables (from February of next year). First we are going to seed the different vegetables and then plant them in late April or early May of 2011. I have learned many vegetables’ names and it is easy for me to get the seeds and explain to our people the names of different vegetables. Thank you very much for your priceless service.

    With Best Regards,

You do find these in major retail outlets across the country. In Hyderabad, you can try Hypercity at InOrbit Mall. You can find Red Cabbage, Chinese cabbage, iceberg lettuce etc., in Spencers outlets in Chennai. Most of the metros and IT corridors have mega retail outlets that caters to the needs of expatriates in the country. You can even get different varieties of spices, wines, condiments, specialty breads etc., that are used in European, Mediterranean cooking in these retail outlets across the country. Also imported baby foods like Gerber and other brands are available. To sum up, if you know where to look, you can get almost everything you find at home available in India. Travelers from the west should note this and try not to pack stuff that they can easily buy in India. My colleague from US came visiting India and did not have space in his baggage to take back gifts as he had loaded food stuff all the way from USA and found everything available here.

    Greetings

I’ve been told that Thossaikai (Telengu) is a much loved vegetable for chutneys. It resembles an orange. It is round and can be the size of a golf ball. The larger ones look like grapefruits. The colour may be that of sandalwood paste or lemony yellow. You have to peel it and the flesh is off-white. When cut into half, the seeds are exposed. They are embedded in an orange wet pulp in. The seeds are scooped out before cooking.
Thossaikai has a mildly tangy taste and the cooked texture is that of winter melon (but a tad firmer).
I’d like to know the English name for it so that I may find out the nutritional value.

    Thanks.

    Greetings,
Is lemon cucumber (dosakkai) a type of squash or type of cucumber? I’m allergic to any sort of cucumber but am able to consume squash freely. Thanks.

Thossaikai (Telengu)… the spellings of both are wrong. Thossaikai actually is DOSAKKAYA in TELUGU and not ‘Telengu’ Yellow variety of Dosakkaya is also called Nakka Dosakkaya. It is good for pachadlu (Chutnies) and also Kooralu (Curries). It is also put in Sambar or Pulusu

Actual word of Telugu is Telungu only. But kaala krameana telungu is changed to telugu as most of the letters in telugu script was been removed. Telungu ani mana script lo raayalante ara sunna use chesi telugu ani raayaali. Ara sunna ki ippudu antha importance ledu. But idi kooda 100% correct kaadu. Old literature lo ara sunna tho paatu maro aksharam use chese vaaru.(idi early 20th century lone thesesaaru) These letters are now negligible in telugu literature and hence most of the people write Telugu as telungu.

one of the folks here mentioned Dosaykaaya as Thossaikai(Actually Thosakaaya) which is also correct. It is the way how we speak. Manaki mandalikaalu chaala unnayi. And one more clarification I want to give you is telungu and andhrakam are not one and same. They are 2 languages actually. But today we treat them as dialects

Brocolli is not a part of traditional vegetables in India. So we don’t have name for it. For now we need to call it with same name. May be somebody who revise telugu dictionaries shall introduce telugu name for it.
