Tomato dal

This is my entry for RPs JFI “Tomatoes”


Tomato dal 


Toor dal is a common dal cooked by indians with a combination of vegetables.Here I am posting the one cooked with tomato.This goes well with rice or rotis.Enjoy!



  1. Toor dal – 2cups
  2. Tomatoes – 3
  3. Green chillies – 3
  4. Turmeric powder – 1tsp
  5. Coriander leaves – 2tsp

For seasoning/tempering:

  1. Mustard seeds – 1tsp
  2. Cumin -1tsp
  3. Garlic – 2 pods crushed or Hing (pinch)
  4. Red chillies -2
  5. Oil – 2tsp
  6. Curry leaves – few


  • Dry roast toor dal in a pan,wash and cook in pressure cooker along with tomatoes,greenchillies,turmeric and chilli powder.
  • Heat oil in a sauce-pan and add the ingredients for seasoning and to this mash and add the cooked dal ,salt and cook for another 5min.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves at the end and remove from stove.
  • This dal goes well with plain hot rice

    hi, i’ve tried brinjal methi powder curry and i liked the dish. so i moved to make another dish that is toor dal with fenugreek seeds. i stay in ireland and your recipes are helpful to me. i have a question that where have you used tamarind pulp in this toor dal with fenugreek seeds dish.
