Dosakaya/Cucumber dal is a type of dal cooked with yellow lentils and indian cucumber (round yellow one) especially famous  in Andhra Pradesh(S.India).


  1. Dosakaya/yellow cucumber – 1
  2. Toor dal – 1 cup
  3. Tamrind pulp – 1tsp
  4. Turmeric  powder – 1/4tsp
  5. Salt to taste
  6. Green chillies – 2
  7. Coriander leaves – to garnish 

For seasoning:

  1. Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
  2. Jeera – 1/4 tsp
  3. Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
  4. Methi seeds – 1/4 tsp
  5. Curry leaves – few
  6. Garlic pods – 2


  • Fry the toor dal in a tsp of oil ,wash and boil in a cup of water in pressure cooker.
  • Wash & clean Cucumber and remove all the seeds and cut into small pieces.
  • Boil separatelly cucumber pieces in a cup of tamarind water along with green chillies,curry leaves and turmeric powder.
  • After the dal is cooked add to the cucumber pieces and also add salt to it.
  • Finally add the seasoning ingredients(heat a tsp of oil in a pan and add urad dal,jeera,mustard seeds,methi seeds,curry leaves,garlic pods) to the above dal.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves  the end.
  • Tastes good with plain rice.

* if u wish u can peel the cucumber or cook even  without peeling too.

    your recipes look very tasty!
    i was hoping you could answer a question for me. i have a very good friend from south india (she says she used to live 1 and 1/2 hour plane ride from bombay ). she is growing a vegetable in her backyard (in texas) and it looks like a small (4 inch) cucumber on the outside, but inside it is orange and seedy like someone put a tomato inside!! when i asked her what it was called, she said she didn’t know the english name, but she called it a “kovalkoa” or “koalkoa”? am i describing anything you have ever seen before?

    Hi melissa,
    Thank you. By your description I think u are talking about the indian yellow cucumber (the same I used here in my dal above)when it is ripe it is yellow outside with seeds inside or orange too.Hope that helps ….
