Panasapattu/Raw jackfruit curry

Jackfruit ,is my favourite which has dual advantage which is cooked as a vegetable when raw and  also as a  fruit when ripe.I regularly cook this as a vegetable which we get in Indian stores in cans here.




Panasapattu curry


Raw jackfruit curry is called Panasapattu curry in Andhra Pradesh(S.India). This is a traditional curry cooked generally at the weddings in south india. 


  1. Raw jackfruit -1 (Fresh or stored in cans is fine)
  2. Tamarind pulp – 3tsp
  3. Green chillies – 4
  4. Turmeric powder – 1tsp
  5. Oil – 2tsp
  6. Salt to taste

For seasoning:

  1. Chana dal – 1tsp
  2. Urad dal – 1tsp
  3. Mustard seeds – 1tsp
  4. Curry leaves – 4 to 5
  5. Dry red chillies – 2
  6. Groundnuts – 2tsp


  • Cut the jackfruit into very tiny pieces and boil them in water for 15min by adding turmeric powder till soft.
  • In a pan take 2tsp oil and add the seasoning ingredients. Once the mustard seeds starts spluttering add green chillies,tamarind pulp , jackfruit pieces ,salt and cook for 5min.
  • This traditional andhra curry goes well with rice.

    it is panasa pottu,and not pattu.
    pattu means silk in telugu.

    All the same taste of this curry, like all andhra curries, is great and unique.
    apply oil to palms while cutting panasa kai.
